Tom Harris on housing benefit

Another week, another irrelevant swirl in the bidet of British political journopukery.

Comes Labour MP Tom Harris to put in context the present administration's proposed limit on housing benefit, denounced as "the final solution" by the doyenne of the cūli emeritus causa.

"Let me simply point out this from Labour’s 2010 manifesto", Harris writes, "you know, the one written by Ed Miliband?"
Our goal is to make responsibility the cornerstone of our welfare state. Housing Benefit will be reformed to ensure that we do not subsidise people to live in the private sector on rents that other ordinary working families could not afford.

  1. How can "responsibility" be the goal of a Welfare State? Or does this mean that all responsibility eventually reverts to the Welfare State as indeed it should.

I mean, if we are all 'equal', shouldn't those on welfare have the right to live in state-supported three and four-bedroom houses in nice middle-class areas? Otherwise, what price equality? I mean, after all, who can be really responsible for our basic equality if not the Welfare State?

Isn't that what the EU and New labour is all about? What is the problem?
