Eric Joyce - professional liar slams the amateurs

I wish I had seen the Falkirk MP and Labour puke shadow Northern Ireland minister's piece in Labour Uncut before glooming about the prospects of the Tory party. When your opponents are willing to tell the Great British Public what c****s they are, who needs supporters?
What if it were the case that our democratic system does not systematically and dysfunctionally send just the scum of the earth to Westminster? What, instead, if it were true that many people were living lies and using politicians as a means of exorcising their own demons of guilt and frustration; politicians the vessel for their own imperfections?

Here’s the truth. It’s hard to lie as a politician because everything we say is subject to enormous scrutiny – we’ll get found out even if we wanted to lie in the first place. But politicians know the lies a lot of people live and they pitch to you accordingly. There’s a lot of lying going on, for sure. The letters-page paragons are right in that respect. But they might want to reflect on who is really doing the lying.
Well, chummy, by your own admission you are, for one. People are offered an extremely circumscribed set of options at elections because, as you say, only the scum rises to the top in politics as it is practiced today, particularly in Scotland, which gave us the wonders of your political neighbour Gordon Brown's regime.

So no, Eric Joyce, you cannot evade your personal responsibility for being a lying sack of shit by claiming that this is what your electors want you to be.

P.S. 20 November. Aha! It was in vino veritas. Joyce resigned after losing his licence for a year and being fined £400 for refusing to provide a breath test. He admitted the charge at Falkirk Sheriff Court, after spending the night in police cells.

  2. Trouble is, there IS no sense of shame in the political class. There's a Spanish word, sinvergüenza, which translates literally as "without shame" but which describes someone without any sense of personal morality or honour, who is bound only by considerations of what s/he can get away with. Blair is a classic example.
