Cardinal Walter Kasper, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, has decided his gout will not permit him to join Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Britain because "when you land at Heathrow you think at times you have landed in a Third World country."
Right on, Cardinal K, was my first reaction. For twenty years, whenever I visited Britain from Latin America, I had the same thought. Dirt and litter everywhere, surliness and bad manners ever more apparent, and millions of pounds of ludicrously unnecessary road alterations bearing witness to endemic municipal corruption.
Cue outrage from offended Brits. In response to which the Vatican PR department explained that the cardinal was commenting on Britain's multicultural society.
Ah. So it's the untermenschen he objects to. That makes it all better!
