A billion here, a billion there - it all adds up

The Sunday Times (£) reports that Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude has been quietly squeezing the balls of nineteen companies to reduce the scope and cost of their state sector contracts, for an immediate saving of £800 million. In some cases (for which read G4S, Crapita, Serco and BT) the firms have agreed to take a short-term hit on operating margins, which may lead to stock market profit warnings.

If those contracts had been honestly reached and open to scrutiny, there would have been nothing quiet about the negotiations. The silence of the pigs speaks volumes. It makes today's publication of the Taxpayers' Alliance report on how the Brown regime channeled £85 million through government departments and quangos to bribe the trades unions seem like small potatoes.

It is fascinating to see pork-busters like Eric Pickles (blessings be on him) and the shark-like Maude ripping away the corrupt legacy of the Blair-Brown regime. It seems you can buy all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but once you turn the light of day on their scams they come quietly.
